Distinguished and Famous people from Quilpie
✈️ Amy Johnson
Amy Johnson landed at Quilpie in May 1930 while flying onward from Darwin towards Brisbane after becoming the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia. The town’s account attributes the unexpected stop to an outdated map. It was a memorable arrival for a community whose later airport museum retained the story alongside the earlier wool scour. Johnson’s visit places Quilpie within the Australian travels of an aviator already attracting international attention. The map mishap is a useful reminder of the practical limits behind the glamour: celebrated pilots still had to identify the right patch of country beneath them.
🐎 Patrick Durack
Patrick Durack established Thylungra and Kyabra stations with relatives in 1868 after an earlier attempt at pastoral expansion had failed during drought. Aboriginal assistance had helped the first party survive. Later, from Thylungra, he organised the movement of thousands of cattle and horses towards the Kimberley, extending the family’s interests into another region. His career involved considerable organising ability, but also the acquisition of vast areas of Aboriginal Country for pastoral use. The Quilpie district connection lies in the stations and the departure point of that major movement of stock, rather than simply in later retellings of the Durack family story.
